Swim Squad

The Swim Squad is operated by Wigan Council  and provides the Elite Swimmers of the Borough the necessary facilities, and expert full-time professional coaching to allow every member the opportunity to reach their full potential. Following the guidelines as set out in the sports Long  Term Athlete Development Plan (LTAD)

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT

The Squad links in with the Community Swimming Clubs, where the developing young swimmers will develop from working in the Squads Junior Development Group firstly working with their community club and 1 hour session with the squad, within 6 months swimmers would be expected to develop to 2 * 1 hour sessions (JD2) and then 3 * 1 hour session (JD3)

AGE GROUP DEVELOPMENT

Once the swimmer has acquired the skills within the Junior Development Group they will progress to the Age Group Development here swimmers will be 9 years to 11 years working to achieve County Qualifying Times (QT) and to progress to achieve success at County Level. Swimmers will be expected to attend between 4 and 5 sessions each week.

AGE GROUP PERFORMANCE

The next level swimmers move through to Age Group Performance here swimmers work towards Regional QT and success. Swimmers will be expected to attend between 5/6 sessions per week and develop their ambitions to achieve National success using the available pool time and dry land session under the guidance of the AG performance lead coach.

NATIONAL PERFORMANCE

Once the swimmer has proven their ambition to succeed and the acquired ability level the swimmer will be invited to attend the National Performance Group under the guidance of the Wigan Council Swim Squad Head Coach. From here swimmers will be expected to aspire to their full potential following the guidelines of LTAD. Swimmers will be expected to have high level of commitment and ambition and follow the programme as laid out by the Head Coach.
